Lego Bricks ...Virtually Endless Possibilities

Just exactly what is a Lego Brick?

Born in 1949 and re-released as a "locking" brick in 1957, patented and sold first in 1958, the Lego Brick became the cornerstone for Lego Development as we know it today.

In 1963 cellulose acetate (plastic) was replaced by ABS (acrylnitrile butadiene styrene) enabling the Lego Brick to take on new strength, composition and an availability to introduce brighter colors.

Every year children spend over 4 billion hours playing with Lego Bricks and 3 billion are made every year in factories in Denmark, Switzerland, USA, South Korea and Brazil.

All of the 1,200 separate Lego pieces, excluding trees and flowers, can be fitted together. Special Lego accessory pieces include windows and doors that open and close, ladders that extend and swivel into place, motorized Lego Bricks that can be coupled with gears, pulleys, hinges, pistons and pumps to make parts of your creations move, light and sound bricks that can make siren noises and beeping sounds, and flashing lights in different colors.

As time passed for the Lego Brick evolution new ones were introduced that include the first base piece in 1953, first lights in 1957, first wheel in 1962, first hinge in 1967, first magnetic coupling in 1968, first electric train track in1969, first Duplo and Duplo People in 1977, Lego Technic introduced in 1977, first flexible mini-figure in 1978, first railroad tie in 1980, first shock absorber in 1983, Lego Duplo Baby series in 1989, 11 Pirate sets in 1990, dragons in 1993, Lego Technic in 1994, Lego Primo for under 2's in 1995 and by 1997 542 different sets & 1,964 pieces included dolphins and the Lego Watch System.
